What Sheen to Use? - Flat (matt) , Eggshell, Satin, Semi, Gloss) |
|
Here is a basic rule of thumb and a brief explanation on Sheen. I put the most emphasis on flat finished right now because they are the most popular but often the most misuses paint sheen. Why? Many designers and new construction like to use this paint because it hides bad work but it will not last in high traffic area's
Flat Paint
Pro's
One of my favourite finishes is flat however, you need to be sure you are using this finish in the appropriate area's. Flat (often called "matt") is ideal for covering poorly finished, uneven surfaces or where incoming light may enhance unwanted imperfections.
Flat paint defuses light and is the choice sheen for darker colours in rooms with little traffic (bedrooms, dens, living rooms) where you want that velvet look and feel.
Cons
NEVER USE flat paint in high traffic area's examples: (hallways, bathrooms, closets or any commercial building). Also, I never recommend using flat paint with light colours because it often looks dirty and dull. However there is the exception but its only when you do not want the colour to be noticeable or concerned it will ever be scuffed or cleaned. Even though the new flats say they are washable, this is a total farce because they do not take being rubbed at all. Rubbing or washing flat paint will instantly shine the surface and become very visible. If you are in total control of your traffic, no children no cleaning staff etc then they are beautiful but if you have hired custodians that are busy wiping down everything, including scuffs on walls, DO NOT USE FLAT paint! Go with a more durable finish like eggshell.
Eggshell
Highly recommended for most common area's.
Satin
Highly recommended for closets, all trim and doors.
Semi
Highly recommended for high traffic commercial doors and trim
Gloss
Highly recommended for elevators doors, radiators and other steel surface's needing the ultimate protection.

| | Chris Urry per: Old School Drywall Posted: | I have had the pleasure of working on a beautiful home with Chris. I did all of the drywall repairs, and Chris did the painting of the entire home including cabinets, besides the drywall repairs that I had personally done. Chris is very conscientious, and to be honest, I have not seen a painter of his caliber in quite a number of years. He takes pride in his work, and it shows! He takes the time to do all of the little extras that make a difference between an average job, and an excellent one! I have seen many painters in my 30 years in the drywall trade, and unlike most painters, he does not rush his job, and as mentioned, he takes the time to caulk every crack, to the point of his finger bleeding! Nowadays, no painter does that, nor do they know what spackle is! Chris is truly an old-school artisan, and I highly recommend him to everyone that demands excellence!
