I'm not a fan of Sikkens exterior stain (Cetol 1 and 3). it is toxic
and sloppy. It does look
excellent if applied properly, however, I think there are better
products out
there that don't look like a shinny pumpkin in a few years or kill
every thing in its path. It reminds me of Creosote. Didn't they
ban this stufF?
I think Sikkens is over rated
and I don't reccomend it. Other than how toxic it seems, my biggest
concern is how fast it dries and doesn't soak into the wood very well.
I like to drench wood and remove the excess. I like to see in
soak in. This stuff just runs.
I've seen a pile of log homes with this stuff and not one looked good
to me. Beams fail near the ground areas far too fast and over all, it
seems to get flacky and old premature. Maybe all the homes I've seen to
date where the applicators fault and I'll know more in a few years
after this project weathers the test of time.
I've applied this product
on cloudy days, out of direct sunlight at temeratures in the low 20c.
Perfect condition for staining. IMO Sikkens gives wood a surface
varnish look rather than a deep luster look I prefer.
That being said, I recoated a home that had Sikkens on cedar siding
last year (pictures coming). Because it was already on this home we
chose to use it again. I have heard removing old coats was a nasty job
but, I actually removed 90% of it using my log finishing cup brush. I
was able to start out with fresh wood again. As difficult as it
was to avoid running and sags, the finish turned
out excellent.
The point to this article is to let people know
you can remove Sikkens with some elbow grease and proper tools. To
avoid that infamous pumpkin look Sikkens its known for, get off the old
as much as possible and your home should look excellent. I look forward
to adding more on how well it lasts in a few years.
Cheers

| | PAINTING Guys Random Testimonial |
| | Allison Read/Grant Zimmerman Posted: | We bought a home that had a tremendous amount of woodwork, some of which was in great condition and remains as a warm accent, but most of which was stained, dark, and a bit dreary. We consulted with Chris, and he helped us decide what could be done, and gave us an honest assessment of the cost associated. Chris is more expensive than other painters, but he is absolutely worth it. We are thrilled we retained him, and so proud of the final result that we achieved only with his help.
Though every room he worked on was transformed beautifully, perhaps the biggest impact was in our kitchen. Our kitchen layout is great, and the cabinets were a nice design, but they were a faded pine, with coloured inserts. Chris, with his signature technique and skill, painted them so that they look factory perfect. This effort alone has added significant value to our home.
Chris is an interesting, intelligent, and thoughtful person, and is a pleasure to have working in your home. In the month and a half he worked with us we came to feel like he was part of the family!
Chris, we are grateful for you!
